Building a new home requires several types of permits and requires builders to follow standard processes. To get started on a new home construction project, we have provided some information, tips, and links to assist builders throughout the process.

What permits do I need?

All new home construction projects require three permits to start work:

1. Lot Grading permit
2. Development permit
3. Building permit

Builders will need to create an account on the CityView portal, and all permit applications and documentation will need to be submitted electronically through CityView. Each permit must be accompanied by the required documentation upon submittal.

Once an account is created, builders can:

• Submit applications
• Pay fees online
• Track the status of all permits
• Request inspections
• View receipts, approved plans, and inspection reports
• Submit additional documentation, if required

A current City of Spruce Grove business licence is needed before applying for permits. As a reminder, business licences need to be renewed annually.

Building permit requests

The City has updated how online building permit requests are submitted by simplifying the process for applicants. Builders can now apply for multiple permits on behalf of contractors at the same time; this includes trade permits such as electrical, gas and plumbing. To do this, builders will select the “Trades – Combo” package in CityView, which allows builders to submit one application for all three permits.
