Cart Storage and Placement

Cart storage and placement guidelines help streamline waste management, ensuring cleaner, safer neighbourhoods while reducing hazards and pests. We encourage everyone to be a responsible homeowner and do their part to keep the community clean!

When putting your black waste cart and green organics cart out for collection, please remember to keep these guidelines, as outlined in the City's Municipal Solid Waste Bylaw, in mind to help ensure efficient pickup, safe and clean streets and sidewalks, and improved sightlines for everyone in our community! Proper placement helps our crews safely pick up the carts without worrying about vehicles or objects.

NEW – Cart storage

When it's not collection day, all your carts must be stored on your personal property. That means no carts on the road, sidewalk, or alley. This includes the grass boulevard between the City sidewalk and the curb. Let's keep those public areas clutter-free!

Cart placement during collection

Here are the guidelines for where you should place your black waste cart and green organics cart during collection.

  • Carts must be set out for collection by 7 a.m. on your designated collection day, but no earlier than 24 hours in advance of your collection day. We want to keep our streets looking tidy and avoid obstructing your neighbours.
  • On collection day, put your carts on the street against the curb or at the edge of your property in areas where collection is done in the alley. Ensure the arrows on the carts are facing out towards the road.
  • Maintain at least one meter’s length of clearance on all sides of the carts. This helps our crews safely pick up the carts without worrying about vehicles or objects.
  • Keep cart lids fully closed.
  • Maximum weight is 200 lbs.
  • Following collection, carts must be removed from the road or alley by 11:59 p.m. on collection day.

Automated trucks are used for residential waste collection. Proper cart placement is required to ensure successful collection. Improper placement, or lids that are not fully closed, will result in your waste or organics carts not being collected or possibly a ticket.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe and clean!
