Save some gas, hop on a Bird!

The City is partnering with Bird Canada to conduct an e-scooter pilot program in Spruce Grove. Dozens of battery-powered electric scooters (e-scooters) are now available for residents and visitors to rent for short trips around the city. The eco-friendly transportation option is controlled through a free smartphone app which allows users to locate, unlock and pay for their e-scooter.

E-scooters are reserved for those age 16 and above, and can be used on trails, pathways and sidewalks in Spruce Grove. Advanced geofencing technology controls where the e-scooters are ridden and parked, and how fast they can travel.

“We’re excited to partner with Bird Canada to pilot this technology to our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “We’re looking forward to gathering some important data and feedback during the trial period and determining if this is something we want to adopt on a permanent basis.”

The pilot program runs from June 1 to November 30, 2023. The City will hold a public hearing, likely in early 2024, where residents and users of the service can ask questions and submit their feedback.

“We applaud the City of Spruce Grove for its commitment to offering convenient, environmentally friendly and reliable transportation options to residents and visitors,” said Austin Marshburn, Senior Director, Government Partnerships at Bird.

The Bird Canada smartphone app is available through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
