Several key milestones were reached on the Civic Centre project in March, with more than 100 workers on the site each day, along with over 25 pieces of equipment including 15 different scissor/boom lifts allowing workers to safely work overhead. The installation of the structural steel has started for the satellite location for the Spruce Grove Public Library. This is a significant milestone as construction expands to include the cultural facility components of the Civic Centre. To support this work, a specialized hydraulic folding crane was brought to the site to begin installing the steel for the balance of the facility. The crane is currently set up in the future courtyard area and from that one location, it will be able to reach all the remaining areas of the facility including the library, art gallery, black box theatre, and lobby! Not having to move the crane results in quicker and more efficient construction.

Other significant milestones achieved in March include the delivery of a new electric Zamboni and the installation of the ice plant.

The Zamboni was ordered early to ensure delivery on time, as well as take advantage of a grant from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program. Using an electric Zamboni will help improve the air quality in the arenas and remove any potential risks from using combustible fuels. The Zamboni is currently being stored at the City’s Public Works Facility until the Civic Centre construction is complete.

The ice plant is a self-contained unit located outside of the building and is one of the most expensive and critical systems in any arena. Without a functioning ice plant, the ice in an arena won’t last very long! Critical system temperatures and pressures will be monitored electronically in the plant and if any of these points are out of tolerance, alarms will be sent to the arena operators. Both arenas are also equipped with dehumidification systems to remove moisture from the air, resulting in improved ice quality and more efficient ice plant operations.

Additionally, significant progress continues to be made on both the spectator and community arenas.

• Work continues on the seating bowl in the spectator arena.
• The roof of the spectator arena is being installed.
• Exterior cladding on both arenas is being installed.
• Structural steel for the mezzanine event space in the spectator arena is being installed.
• Interior painting is ongoing.
• Rebar installation for the structural slab that will support the ice slab of the community arena has been completed.
