Civic Centre project update – January 2024

January 31, 2024

January was a busy month at the site of the Civic Centre project. Highlights from this month include:

  • A large portion of the community arena has been fully enclosed, allowing the contractor to start installation of the mechanical and electrical components, as well as interior painting.
  • Structural steel for the spectator arena is going up, as has the steel for the dressing room areas of both arenas.
  • Concrete installation for the spectator arena seating bowl has also begun.

The scoop on the steel

It takes an incredible amount of skill, coordination, and equipment to erect all the required steel at the Civic Centre site! Between 15 and 20 workers are dedicated to this important task each day, which also involves the use of two 100-ton cranes, one self-erecting tower crane, and four aerial work platforms.

One tall column of steel in the spectator arena weighs about 14,000 pounds, which means when all the structural steel is installed, approximately 1.4 million pounds of steel will have been used!
