City receives grant for new electric Zamboni

March 22, 2024

The City of Spruce Grove recently added a new electric Zamboni 650 ice resurfacer to our fleet thanks in part to $50,000 of grant funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program.

The new electric Zamboni will be used to clean the ice surfaces of both the spectator and the community arenas at the Civic Centre, which is currently under construction.

“This new Zamboni will be a welcome addition to our fleet and will certainly be kept busy once the new Civic Centre is open next year,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “I’d like to thank the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre for the funding for this piece of equipment, which also aligns with one of the themes in Council’s Strategic Plan, which is Environmental Sustainability for our community.”

“As a parent, I know that how important arenas are to communities, and how much energy they can use,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “Energy efficiency upgrades can carry a high price tag, which is why we’re pleased to help fund this project. This electric ice resurfacer will help lower utility costs while reducing emissions and supporting family fun at the rink.”

The City also received $14,000 of funding towards the purchase of two plug-in hybrid Ford Escapes for the City’s fleet through the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program as well.

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.
