City of Spruce Grove puts forward resolution to Alberta Municipalities to advocate for increased funding for accessible playgrounds
Alberta Municipalities membership has officially adopted a resolution, put forward by Spruce Grove City Council, calling on the Government of Alberta to increase capital funding for accessible playgrounds at all new, replacement or renovated Alberta public schools with K-6 programming.
Currently there is a gap in the provincial capital funding model for school playgrounds where, due to cost, accessibility features often depend on external fundraising. This places a burden on schools and communities, making accessible infrastructure less attainable for many.
Spruce Grove Councillor Danielle Carter presented the City’s resolution to Alberta Municipalities on November 28. The resolution positions Alberta Municipalities to advocate directly to the provincial government for necessary changes to current funding structures.
"I was honoured to bring forward this resolution on behalf of City Council,” said Councillor Carter.
“This resolution represents more than just financial support. It is our commitment to building inclusive communities where everyone can participate, thrive, and feel a sense of belonging,” added Carter.
"Accessible playgrounds should be a standard feature at schools, not something left to fundraising efforts. We’re thrilled to have our municipal peers support our resolution,” said Spruce Grove Mayor Jeff Acker.
“This is a priority for our Council and impacts communities across Alberta. All kids deserve equal opportunities to play, and accessible playgrounds are a vital part of building inclusive schools and communities,” added Mayor Acker.
