City introduces new community outreach model to support the unsheltered
The City of Spruce Grove is now operating a new community outreach model of service to support unsheltered individuals, those at risk of homelessness in the community and individuals who experience multiple barriers to well-being.
This community outreach model consists of a Community Outreach Team of an outreach supervisor, three community outreach workers, and a dedicated Community Peace Officer. As a team, they will be responsible for supporting vulnerable residents and connecting them to appropriate resources, either in Spruce Grove or in other jurisdictions.
“Introducing this new outreach model will provide a range of benefits to our community,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “It will allow professional outreach workers to connect directly with individuals who need support, while also assisting law enforcement, emergency responders, and health professionals. This team will also increase community awareness of the unsheltered and help build understanding on this complex issue.”
The Community Outreach Team will also address matters including encampments and social disorder and be active in providing timely responses to the community, businesses, and partner inquiries to enhance community education, awareness and coordination.
Details on this new model of service were shared with Council during an August 21, 2023, Council meeting.
Outreach support is available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The community outreach model is funded through a combination of municipal and grant sources.
Additionally, the City is continuing its efforts to develop and secure a partner, location, and funding for a permanent supportive housing facility in Spruce Grove.
We recognize and appreciate the community’s interest in this topic and will continue to provide information and updates as this moves forward.
