City Council members tour Civic Centre site

October 23, 2023

Members of Spruce Grove City Council had an opportunity to tour the Civic Centre site on Friday, Oct. 13, and get an up-close look at the construction progress to date.

Joined by members of City Administration and PCL Construction, Council members were able to check out the new Transit Centre location, as well as walk around the outside perimeter of the under-construction Civic Centre building. This included seeing the space that will eventually become the satellite location for the Spruce Grove Public Library and, of course, the two arenas!

Located north of Westwind Drive in the Westwind development, the Civic Centre is the single largest project the City has ever done. The facility will also include a Black Box Theatre, an art gallery and dedicated program room, and a community walking track.

To date, most of the work has been underground and not easily visible. However, in the coming weeks there will be more visible progress on site as the steel beams begin to go up and the Civic Centre begins to take shape. Interior work is expected to begin in early 2024.

“It’s incredibly exciting to get a firsthand look at the progress of the Civic Centre,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “As a City Council, we know this facility is going to be a game-changer for us, as it will become a hub for both cultural and recreational activities in one place. Seeing the foundation in place really drives home the fact that soon we will have an amazing new facility to support our growing community.”

Construction is expected to continue through late 2024, and the anticipated opening date for the Civic Centre is early 2025.
