Diversity and Inclusion

Spruce Grove is home to people from all walks of life. We believe diversity makes our community vibrant.

Social Planning is leading the City of Spruce Grove’s Community Inclusion Initiative. It starts with us looking inward to better support diversity as a municipality. We’ve already taken some major steps as an organization including:

  • Gender Based Analysis+ training for all City of Spruce Grove staff
  • Reviewing and revising policies and practices with equity in mind
  • Approving the Community Inclusion Initiative in the corporate plan for 2021 – 2023.

At the same time we’re working on ourselves, we’re also working with community in three areas:

Reconciliation

Working towards Truth and Reconciliation in Spruce Grove is important. Calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls help set a path forward. Building on the work from New Beginnings, we support Indigenous rights to self-determination and will work with Indigenous partners to co-create an equitable future together.

No Longer Marginal

This focus will seek to support and empower equity seeking groups to bring meaningful, inclusive and system-level change. These groups include, but are not limited to:

  • Indigenous peoples
  • Faith-based groups
  • LGBTQ2S+
  • Newcomers, new Canadians
  • Persons living in poverty
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Racialized people, people of diverse ethnic or cultural origin
  • Seniors
  • Women
  • Youth

Celebrating Diversity

Seeing yourself represented in the community is important to feeling a sense of belonging. Let’s celebrate the beautiful diversity in Spruce Grove that makes it a vibrant place to live!
