Horseshoe Pits

The City owns and maintains one regulation size horseshoe pit which is available for public use daily between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. (weather permitting). The facility is first come, first served; no booking or registration is required. Players must bring their own horseshoes. Pits are equipped with stakes and wood barriers.

The pits are located in the green space just west of TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre adjacent to the outdoor rink. See the location on a map.

Object of the game

  • To pitch (throw) a “ringer” or land your horseshoe closest to the stake using an underhand toss.
  • The player with the highest score wins; games are typically played to 40 points. Ringers are worth 3 points, shoes that come to rest within six inches (15.2 cm.) of the stake are worth 1 point.

Safety first

  • Horseshoes are made of solid steel and can cause serious injury.
  • Never throw until players and spectators are out of the pit and a safe distance away.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and environment.
  • Make sure your horseshoes, the pits, and the stakes are in good condition and not in need of maintenance before playing.

Guidelines for play

  • Players must pitch from either the left or right side of the pitching platform.
  • Both shoes must be delivered from the same side each turn.
  • Players have 30 seconds to deliver both shoes.
  • After one player has pitched, they leave the platform allowing the other player to pitch.
  • Players switch ends after tossing to begin a new inning.

Courtesy and etiquette

  • Remain quiet and avoid unnecessary movements when others are throwing.
  • Stand behind the player who is pitching until pitch is complete.
  • When others are waiting, limit games to 30 minutes.
  • Vandalizing pits, signs, park equipment, and landscaping is a serious offense that will result in prosecution.
