Leaders in Training

Looking for ways to gain valuable work experience? Apply to volunteer as a Leader in Training (LIT) to meet friends and challenge your leadership skills in a fun and exciting atmosphere. As a volunteer you will be partnered with Summer in the City Program Leaders to run various summer programs, such as Adventure Camp, Art Explorer Camp, and Pop-Up Playground.

  • Youth wishing to participate as a Leader in Training must apply.  Applying to the program does not guarantee that you will be a successful candidate.
  • Applicants must be available for mandatory interview and training / orientation sessions.
  • Participants who complete 35 hours of volunteering will receive a certificate of completion and a reference letter. 

Dates: Volunteer placements are available throughout July and August and generally take place from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Monday – Friday).

Program Fee: Registration is required after a successful interview

$25 (for shirt, HIGH FIVE® Certification, and 2-day training)

How to apply

You can apply online. Applications for the LIT program will close June 2, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Who can apply?

Youth ages 13-17 and have completed Grade 7 who are:

  • Interested in gaining leadership and work experience
  • Able to commit to at least of one full week of camp
  • Available to attend the mandatory training / orientation July 4 and 5

Benefits of the program

  • A robust two day orientation to prepare LITs for volunteering (including resume building, practicing interview skills, and training on our programs)
  • All participants will receive a certificate of completion.
  • A reference letter once 35 hours achieved (28hrs with 4 day camps).
  • A wrap up party at the end of summer to acknowledge the success in the program.
  • Opportunity to network with staff from a variety of areas within recreation.
  • Improve on leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Interview Date Options: Mandatory Training Dates:

For applicants:
Must attend either June 13 or June 14 from
6:30-7:30 p.m. for group interviews.
Location: Border Paving Athletic Centre

For successful candidates:
Both July 4 & 5 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Location: Elks Hall

Volunteer placements (July and August)

Assist the Summer Recreation Program staff with children’s programming in Spruce Grove. Below you will find descriptions of each camp/program. Working with staff, our LIT's will work on goal setting and completing a skills checklist. LIT's will plan and lead an activity for their group with help from their leader. Click the link to get more information on each week.

Adventure Camp 
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Registered weekly programs for children ages 6 – 12. A safe, fun way to meet new friends, stay active and make memories! Activities and experiences including biking, swimming, hiking and games.

Arts Explorer Camp
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Registered camps vary in age and themes. These camps provide a safe, fun way to meet new friends, be creative and make memories! Activities and experiences including arts or craft projects, games and play.

Pop up Playground
A free drop-in program throughout the parks of Spruce Grove in July and August. Designed for kids to attend with friends, parents or caregivers. Each week will feature a different theme with activities, games and crafts.

Please note, LITs will only be assigned to programs where the participants are younger.
