About Cpl. Jim Galloway
The Cpl. Jim Galloway Memorial Off Leash Area is named in honour and memory of Cpl. Jim Galloway for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Spruce Grove.
Cpl. Galloway joined the RCMP in 1969 and always had a keen interest in dogs. He was selected for Police Dog Service and posted to “C” Division (Quebec), Security Services, Dorval Airport in December 1975. He was promoted to Corporal in 1977 and transferred to the “K” Division (Alberta) where he was posted as a dog handler for 26 years. His canine partners were Klia, Shep, Max, Danko and Cito. At the time of his death, Cpl. Galloway held the role of Acting Program Manager, “K” Division Police Dog Service and worked out of the Sherwood Park Detachment.
He also managed the RCMP Civilian Search Dog Association program in Alberta and was instrumental in training and certifying to an approved standard, numerous civilian search dog teams in Alberta. He also served as a member of the Edmonton RCMP Emergency Response Team and provided assistance as a designated dog handler.
Cpl. Galloway died in the line of duty on Feb. 28, 2004, when he was fatally shot while working with the Edmonton RCMP Emergency Response Team during an armed stand-off in Spruce Grove.
