At the Heavy Metal Place site, construction of the co-located Spruce Grove Transit Centre was completed this month, and final inspections are underway.

Significant interior progress in all areas of Heavy Metal Place (formerly referred to as the Civic Centre) occurred throughout September with an average of 115 workers a day on site from more than 25 different trades.

The City of Spruce Grove is excited to announce that local business Heavy Metal Equipment & Rentals will be the naming rights sponsor for the new Civic Centre.

Interior work is keeping construction crews busy at the Civic Centre site, with an average of 120 workers on site per day using 15 lifts in the building to help with overhead work.

Throughout June work on the two arenas in the Civic Centre continued, including painting, dressing rooms for the spectator arena, and the installation of roof top mechanical units to provide ventilation and dehumidification for both arenas.

With the arrival of warmer weather in May, significant work happened around the exterior of the Civic Centre, as well as inside the facility.

Walls are going up on both the exterior and interior of the Civic Centre facility, as the structure continued to take shape throughout April.

The City of Spruce Grove and the Spruce Grove Saints are thrilled to announce they have reached an agreement in principle for the Junior “A” hockey club to remain in Spruce Grove and play out of the spectator arena which is currently under construction as part of the Civic Centre project.
November 23, 2023
Mayor Jeff Acker along with Councillor Stuart Houston and Councillor Erin Stevenson checked out the progress of the Civic Centre site and were able to help raise a steel column on Tuesday Nov. 21. Things are starting to take shape as the construction team is erecting the steel for the community arena, building the formwork for the seating bowl of the spectator arena, and completing the foundation and underground work for the dressing rooms and mechanical areas.

Groundbreaking event officially marks start of history-making Civic Centre project.
October 2022
Advanced design work indicates cost estimates for the project are within the approved budget, which contains an appropriate amount of contingency if required during construction. Updated renderings of the building, which were developed with stakeholder engagement, were also presented. Initial phasing of tenders for the project is also complete and it is anticipated that construction work will begin in November 2022.

Spruce Grove City Council was presented with the proposed budget for the Civic Centre project during a Council meeting on June 13, 2022.
May 2022
Spruce Grove City Council was presented with an update on the proposed Civic Centre, including the design concept, during a special Council meeting on Monday, May 30.
January 2022
An RFP for a Construction Manager to assist with preliminary design of the proposed Civic Centre was issued and is now posted on the Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC) website.

The City continues to work through the preliminary design of the proposed Civic Centre that will help identify the project’s final size, cost estimates, and amenities. We expect to return to Council in the spring of 2022 with more information that will inform future decisions on the development.

This will provide Council with a detailed concept for the project that will inform the decision on moving forward with development.

At the April 26, 2021, Spruce Grove Regular City Council meeting, Council approved a recommendation to move forward with the preliminary design of a Civic Centre based on the concept in the report and presentation. The entire Council meeting is available online.
