Temporary business signage criteria during COVID-19

To help assist businesses required to close due to COVID-19 advertise re-opening in our community, the City will allow select temporary signage on City boulevards and business premises until Aug. 30.

Business owners will be required to notify the City’s Planning and Development department in advance of setting up a temporary sign, and must provide information outlining how long the temporary sign will be displayed. On the City’s boulevard

Temporary signage on the City’s boulevard will be required to meet the following criteria:

Sign specifications

  • Only A-Board and stake signs will be allowed on City boulevards.
  • Signs must advertise the re-opening of a business or service; they cannot be used for general advertising.
  • The front of the sign cannot be larger than 6.5 square feet; the sign cannot be more than 3.2 feet high (1 metre).
  • Signs cannot be illuminated, display intermittent flashing, have rotating lights or moving parts.
  • Signs cannot have balloons or inflatable devices attached to or near them.
  • Signs cannot be attached to trees or fences.
  • Signs must kept in neat and clean condition and securely erected.

Location

  • Signs advertising the same business or service must be spaced at least 15 metres (45 feet) apart.
  • Signs placed on City boulevards cannot create a safety hazard or block sight lines for pedestrians and/or motorists.
  • Signs must be located on boulevards adjacent to arterial and collector roadways; they cannot be located on boulevards adjacent to local roadways.
  • Signs must be at least 1 metre from a public walkway and cannot be placed on medians, which include any hard or soft surface area within a roadway that separates lanes of traffic.
  • Signs must be located at least 2 metres from the curb; where there is no curb, they must be at least 2 metres from the edge of the road. A reduced setback may be considered on the basis of a unique or unusual circumstance.

On the business premises

Temporary signage on the business premises will be required to meet the following criteria:

  • Signs must advertise the re-opening of a business or service; they cannot be used for general advertising.
  • Each business or service can have one A-board sign that is no larger than 4.3 square feet (approximately 2 feet x 2 feet) on the business premises. A development permit will not be required for a sign this size.
  • The A-board sign must not obstruct or impede pedestrian access or traffic.
  • Authorization from the property owner must be provided to the City’s Planning and Development department. To provide this authorization, please call 780-962-7582 or email permits@sprucegrove.org .

Please note: A development permit is still required for any portable sign. One portable sign may be considered for each 90 metres of frontage. If multiple businesses or services on one site wish to have a portable sign, a variance may be considered up to the maximum number of portable signs per site.

Temporary business signage FAQs

An A-board sign is a temporary sign that is A-shaped and sits on the ground. An A-board sign is also knows as a sandwich board sign.

A stake sign is a temporary sign with independent supports affixed to the ground. A stake sign does not include a feather sign.

A portable sign is any temporary sign that is not in a permanently installed or affixed position.
