Keep wipes out of the pipes

March 20, 2020

Residents are being reminded that paper towels and disposable wipes should not be flushed down the toilet.

Wipes labelled as “flushable” are not actually flushable as they don’t break down quickly enough to pass through the pipes. Wipes can snag on any imperfection in a pipe, creating a net that catches debris which then creates a ball that eventually clogs the pipe and can lead to a backup. Backups can lead to basement flooding and sewage overflowing onto City streets. This property damage is expensive for the City and residents to fix.

Please ensure you are not flushing any of the following items:

  • Wipes of any kind, flushable and non-flushable
  • Feminine hygiene products, condoms, contraceptives
  • Fats, oil, grease
  • Bandages, wrappings
  • Cigarette butts and coffee grounds
  • Disposable diapers and dryer sheets
  • Ear swabs, cotton balls, dental floss
  • Facial tissue, paper towels, scrubbing pads
  • Hair
  • Medication
  • Pet waste, kitty litter
  • Automotive fluid
  • Paint, solvents, sealants, thinners
  • Poisons, hazardous waste
  • Plastic of any kind
  • Inorganic materials
  • Syringes, needles, sharps
