New Transit Centre opening December 2, 2024
In conjunction with the development of Heavy Metal Place, the City of Spruce Grove is building a new Spruce Grove Transit Centre to meet the growing transportation needs of our community, which will open to transit riders on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024.
Located at 50 Westwind Drive, the Transit Centre will serve as the hub for all commuter service (Route 560) into and out of Spruce Grove and be a regular stop for the On-Demand Local Transit service, providing patrons of Heavy Metal Place another way to get there and enjoy all its amenities.
It will provide comfort and convenience for transit users, including parking stalls for Park & Ride users at no cost, a passenger drop off/pick up zone, bike racks, and a heated shelter where riders can wait for their bus.
Construction of Heavy Metal Place will still be underway at this time, with an anticipated facility opening in early 2025. This will not impact the operation of the Transit Centre or ability to access Park & Ride parking stalls, but the number of parking stalls will temporarily be limited to approximately 50 stalls in the southeast corner of the site. Once Heavy Metal Place is complete, a total of 600 parking stalls will become available for Park & Ride users at no cost.
Related changes to commuter service
With the opening of the Transit Centre, there will be several changes to Route 560 that will also go into effect on December 2:
- The routing within Spruce Grove will change and the schedule will be adjusted.
- Twelve existing bus stops are being removed from Route 560, specifically those along King Street, Millgrove Drive, Woodhaven Drive, and Brookwood Drive.
- Route 560 will travel counterclockwise around Spruce Grove along Grove Drive, Jennifer Heil Way, McLeod Avenue, Lakeland Drive, and Greystone Drive and include a stop at the Transit Centre both when entering and departing Spruce Grove. See the updated route map for details.
To help riders who currently use these bus stops transition to the new schedule and route, a shuttle bus will temporarily provide service to the affected 12 stops and take riders to the Transit Centre. This temporary service will operate for up to two months and will run every 30 minutes on weekdays during peak hours from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 3 to 6:30 p.m.
Alternatively, those impacted by the bus stop changes can walk to a different bus stop or book an on-demand trip and transfer to Route 560.
